the 34th National Conference on Men and Masculinity Filed under News.
NOMAS is celebrating 34 years of the pro-feminist movement. Come in and learn more. Welcome to our online home! NOMAS is celebrating its 34th year with a call to present at the National Conference on Men & Masculinity (M&M), and the 21st Annual Men's Studies Association Meeting. We are calling upon interested individuals and organizations, that are dedicated to the principles embodied in our tenets and task (focus) groups, to participate and present at the 2009 conference called “Roots of Change: Men, Sex and Justice” to be held at Portland State University, Oregon, October 28-30, 2009. Who should attend? · Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Prevention Professionals · Campus Professionals · Students · Public Health Professionals · Child Abuse Prevention Professionals · Community & Youth Organizers · Others who are interested examining the intersections of social justice issues (e.g., gender, sexual orientation, race, culture, ability) with sexual violence prevention If you have questions or need more information, please contact Ethan Young, Prevention Specialist, at 503.990.6541 or email: ethanyoung@oregonsatf.org. For more information about the conference, please visit http://sati.oregonsatf.org/roots.html. The National Organization for Men Against Sexism is an activist organization of men and women supporting positive changes for men. NOMAS advocates a perspective that is pro-feminist, gay affirmative, anti-racist, dedicated to enhancing men's lives, and committed to justice on a broad range of social issues including class, age, religion, and physical abilities. We affirm that working to make this nation's ideals of equality substantive is the finest expression of what it means to be men. The world has changed dramatically in the 33 years since NOMAS held its first M&M but sexism, homophobia, racism and men's violence are, unfortunately, as prevalent today as they were three decades ago. Although progress has been made in recent times in the struggle for gender and social justice, Sexism, Racism, and Heterosexism continue to appear in different guise and are still alive and well in preventing us and our society from reaching our full human potential. Women still do not make salaries equivalent to their male peers; sexual minorities are still denied basic human rights; racial minorities still experience discrimination especially as states try to implement new voting requirements; and men's violence is still rampant – on individual, community, national and international bases. These oppressions may be subtler than they were in the mid-70s, but the effects are just as repressive and violent on members of our society. As with past conferences, the 33rd National Conference on Men & Masculinity focused on the NOMAS principles and tenets with a particular emphasis on community response to violence. Co-presented by NOMAS, South Valley Sanctuary, University of Utah Women's Center, Utah Pride, and Up the River Endeavors, the conference brought together activists, academics, workers in mental health, diversity, faith communities, domestic and sexual violence. The 20th Annual Men's Studies Association Meeting convened in conjunction with M&M33, providing academics the opportunity to present scholarly papers on these issues. The site will continue to grow and change as we begin to offer greater access to NOMAS' pro-feminist principles and tenets and organize 34 years of history, documents, relationships, and events into accessible archives. Questions, suggestions, submissions (original articles, photographs, poetry, cartoons, etc.) and donations are all welcome. Please donate and become a member today! NOMAS is a 501c3 non-profit so your donations are tax-deductible.
